As the Red Sox got ready to announce their 2011 Opening Day starting lineup, it was confirmed that outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury would start the game. And everyone cheered.
But the real story of the day was that another Red Sox player will be missing the Opening Day festivities — in all likelihood for some time.
Devon Ockerman’s shoulder was examined yesterday and he was diagnosed with bursitis, a collection of fluid in the shoulder, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. He could be out a while, but a more optimistic look at the injury means that he could be back in a week or so.
When the Bruins lost to the Flyers, the Flyers already had the top seed in the East, and so there was no other team available for the shootout game to help the Bruins make the playoffs. The Flyers and Bruins decided to extend the season in the hopes that they would each have a better record than the other at the end of the season.
The Flyers were able to win the game and the top seed in the East, but only because the Bruins took advantage of the on ice advantage to win the overtime game. The Bruins have been credited with winning the Eastern Conference, but as this is a seven-game series, the Flyers could end up finishing with a better record.
If the Flyers finish with a better record than the Bruins (which looks like it will happen), the Flyers will have to play the Rangers in the first round of the playoffs. And it’s unclear if the Flyers will be able to beat the Rangers because of the Rangers’ defense.
Either way, the Flyers will need to play well for the rest of the season, and that is something that they haven’t been able to do since early November.
Normally when I get asked about the draft, I would recommend a piece from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Ballard. He has a great way of explaining how players have gone from high school to the NBA.
But the topic on his blog today is asking about how the draft is now dominated by international ac619d1d87
